Facebook, Twitter come to Xbox Live

The press event included short demonstrations of what are effectively Facebook and Twitter clients for the gaming console, aesthetically adapted to the Xbox Live interface.

With the Facebook app, which will be a download from Xbox Live, members will be able to engage in a limited number of features including photo browsing, status updates, and looking at friends' profile "streams".

But what's more important to game developers is the fact that the Facebook Connect standard — which was rolled out first to web developers, and then to iPhone developers — is coming to the Xbox this fall. This means that players will be able to log in with their Facebook accounts and broadcast their gaming activities on their social-network profiles.

Xbox manufacturer Microsoft made a $240 million investment in Facebook in October 2007. The service now has well over 200 million active users around the world.

Both Facebook products are "pencilled in for the fall [spring time for Australia]", Facebook platform program manager Gareth Davis told CNET News. He said that while there currently aren't plans to bring Facebook's virtual currency plans to the Xbox, he implied that it's not out of the question. "We're constantly looking at ways of improving the user experience or the developer experience with Facebook credits," Davis said.

Spragga Benz's son shot dead

As the euphoria surrounding the emphatic performance of the athletes at the Olympiad dissipates, the country’s murder rate continues to steamroll ahead at a record pace. The latest victim is the 17 year-old Carlton Grant, son of entertainer Spragga Benz, who was shot and killed by police last night.


Reports from CCN are that about 11:50 p.m., members of a police party were on patrol along Church Street when two men were seen on a bicycle. They were signalled to stop and they complied. On approach of the lawmen one of the men pulled a gun and fired at the Police. The fire was returned and the men ran. The area was searched and Grant was found suffering from gunshot wounds. A .45 semi-Automatic pistol serial number N338142 was taken from him. The injured Grant was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

100 years ah Rasta!

Rastafarian's will celebrate one hundred (100) years since the coronation of Ras Tafari on 2 November 2030. The year 2030 does sound a bit far but mathematically it is easy to see that it is only a mere twenty two (22) years away. H.I.M Haile Selassie was crowned on the 02nd November 1930.

Consider the works of Rasta to this point and then consider the reason(s) which cause Rasta to appear criminal. It would be criminal if on that day Rasta's would still have to face this ridicule. Coronation day 2030 is one to look forward to. Empress Menen was crowned Queen on the same day.

Best Margarita Recipe !!!!

• Two parts tequila (good tequila is always better...)
• Half part Grand Marnier (this is a critical part... trust me, don't go cheap on the citrus liqueur. Cointreau also goes very well, but really doesn't have the same aromatic flavor that Grand Marnier has; try them side-by-side; they have totally different flavors... if you cheat here with Triple Sec or Orange Curaçao, you must add a dash of orange bitters!)
• Half part fresh lime juice.
• Half part fresh lemon juice.
• Half part simple syrup.
• Half part Limoncello (a fairly inexpensive type of lemon liqueur that isn't sour but has lots of big citrus flavor... this is, I think, the secret ingredient in most restaurant margaritas— that extra citrus flavor adds a lot without making the drink more tart).
• Pinch of salt. Very little will go a long way... alternatively, rim the glass with coarse salt.

Mix with a bunch of ice cubes in a shaker and shake violently for about 15 seconds (until ice starts to crystallize on the outside of your metal shaker). Pour contents into an old-fashioned glass and, for a nice visual appeal, you can finish with a drop of grenadine (let it sink to the bottom for a sweet finish). Add a couple of skinny straws and a slice of lime if you like. Trust me!

Hint: too strong for your taste? Stir in some lemon-lime soda— don't shake!

Straight Pride Parade

TCOOO Productions is holding the first ever Straight Pride Parade in Brooklyn, New York on August 31, 2008. The parade will take place on Eastern Parkway along the same route as the annual Caribbean labor day parade.

New reggae / dancehall sensation Jango Fresh said, 'the Straight pride parade is a great idea because when a song like 'Hit them hard' by my label mate Stapler can be banned just because it stresses the importance of a male and a female in every family, it is a sign that heterosexuals need to wake up.

Anthony Bourdain Creates Controversy About Dancehall Music

According to ReddingNewsReview.com, Bourdain referred to women as "b***ches" when describing dancehall music in the Jamaican-themed episode of the show. Bourdain makes the following statement in a narration as he and his crew head to a street performance in Kingston:

President Bush Proclaims !!!

June As CARIBBEAN HERITAGE MONTH


President, George Bush has said that the observance of Caribbean Heritage Month is an opportunity for the United States to show its appreciation for the many ways Caribbean Americans have contributed to its growth.

In proclaiming June as Caribbean Heritage Month, President Bush said: "Caribbean Americans have helped to shape our national fabric with their vibrant traditions and their unique history. They have brightened our lives with the spirit and vitality of their culture through strong leadership and pride in their heritage."

"Caribbean Americans have enriched America in all walks of life and they have contributed their talent and added to our nation's development and prosperity. We especially show our gratitude for the men and women of Caribbean descent who served bravely in our Armed Forces and those still serving today. These heroes have answered a call greater than self and we keep them in our thoughts and prayers," he added.

Several activities have been planned to celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Among the events will be the staging of Caribbean Film Showcase, featuring The Harder They Come, starring Jimmy Cliff and Africa Unite featuring the Marley Family, which will take place from June 6 to 7, sponsored by the Institute of Caribbean Studies, Trans-African Forum, Caribbean Association of World Bank (CAWI) and staff, and Caribbean Professional Networking Series (CPN).

On Thursday June 12, Jamaican author, Beverly East will read and discuss her latest work, Reaper of the Souls, a novel based on the 1957 rail disaster in Kendal, Manchester. The reading will take place at the Enrique Iglesias Auditorium of the Inter-American Development Bank. The event is sponsored by the Institute of Caribbean Studies, the Office of the Caribbean Executive Director of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Embassy of Jamaica in Washington, D.C.

In June 2005, the U.S. Senate passed a Bill designating June as Caribbean American Heritage month and in June 2006 a Proclamation making it official was signed by President Bush.

Actress and singer, Sheryl Lee Ralph and basketball great, Rick Fox are the official spokespersons for Caribbean American Heritage Month.

Maxi Priest is the new lead singer of British reggae band, UB40. He has replaced Ali Campbell as the new front man of the band which has decided to carry on despite an acrimonious split with Campbell after a festering row with management. The collaboration with Priest has already yielded a recording of Bob Marley's I Shot The Sheriff and is expected to form half of a double A-side single soon. Priest joined UB40 on tour last year, culminating in sellout shows at the NEC in December. He had top ten hits with Wild World in 1988 and Close To You in 1990. He has worked with Sly and Robbie, Roberta Flack, Shaggy, Shabba Ranks, Joe and Dennis Brown.

Michael Campbell aka Mikey Dread Dies at 54

Jamaican radio DJ and producer Mikey Dread – perhaps best known to rock fans for his work with the Clash – succumbed to a brain tumor at his sister's home in Connecticut . He was 54.

Born Michael Campbell, Dread played an important role in the sonic evolution of the Clash, producing their 'Bankrobber' single in 1980 and appearing on several cuts (including 'Junco Partner') of the band's subsequent sprawling, three-disc release, 'Sandinista!'

"I remember going into the studio to make this track ['Bankrobber']," Dread said in 2006. "And when I heard the track, I wasn't sure about it, because it was too fast. I couldn't understand what Joe [Strummer] was saying. So I told him to slow it down, and we could make it reggae style. And I showed him the beat. And then they didn't have a keyboard player, so I said, 'Reggae has to have a keyboard' -- it can't just have two guitars and drum and bass. And they get Mickey Gallagher."

Dread, who helped introduce underground reggae to mainstream Jamaican radio as a respected disc jockey on the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation via his 'Dread at the Controls' program, also recorded reggae hits as an artist, including 'African Map' and 'Barber Saloon.'

In late 1979, Dread did a press junket to England, which reaped stories in U.K. music papers of the day such as the NME, Sounds and 'Melody Maker. "I guess [the Clash] may have read about me being there," Dread explained in July 2006. "But by the time they contacted me, I was back in. I never know what punk was."

Martin Scorsese is going to be pissed! The Weinstein Company has optioned the rights to "No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley" (pick up a copy on Amazon.com), a book written by Bob Marley's widow Rita Marley, with plans to turn it into a biopic about the legendary Jamaican reggae singer. Scorsese previously announced that he would be directing a documentary about Marley that would be aiming for a February 2010 release. Now No Woman No Cry is going to hit theaters right before it, in late 2009. Apparently a biopic has had issues getting approved by Rita previously, but now this time this one has made it through and is heading into production.

Although no director is attached yet, Lizzie Borden (Working Girls, "Red Shoe Diaries") has written the script and Rudy Langlais (The Hurricane) will produce alongside of Rita Marley, who will be operating as executive producer. The project is only in very early development, which means it won't be some time until we see a director or cast attached.

Rita's book focuses more on the couple's tempestuous marriage, which began in 1966 and weathered numerous separations and affairs, the birth of four children together and an assassination attempt in 1976. Bob Marley died of cancer at 36 in 1981, and in the book, Rita Marley defends herself against accusations that she financially mismanaged the estate. Redemption biopic: Bob Marley!!

The first ever biopic of Bob Marley is in the works, after film producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein optioned the rights to the autobiography of the reggae star's widow, Rita Marley.

The movie will be based on the 2004 memoir No Woman No Cry: My Life with Bob Marley, which chronicles the couple's tempestuous 15-year marriage until his death from cancer in 1981. The couple had four children together, survived several separations and affairs - Marley could have fathered as many as 22 children, and legally recognised ten - and an assassination attempt in 1976.

Rita Marley will serve as executive producer on the project. "This is about a girl from the ghetto and a boy from the rural areas," she told Variety. "It's more than being a superstar - we have trod the rocky roads. It's more than just a story, it's a reality."

"Every inch of me is in there," she also told The Hollywood Reporter. "I don't want a fairy tale or Cinderella story."

Marley would like her husband's daughter-in-law, singer-songwriter Lauryn Hill, to portray her. "Lauryn would be ideal [to play me]," Marley explained. "She sees my life as her life." Hill is married to Rohan Marley, the son the reggae star had with Janet Hunt.

The as-yet-untitled project will be directed by Rudy Langlais, an executive producer on the 1999 Denzel Washington film The Hurricane. The film will be an "epic romance", Langlais told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's miraculous that Rita is still here after being shot in the head," he added, referring to the assassination attempt on the couple.

Screenwriter Lizzie Borden is currently in Jamaica to finish the script. Filming is set to begin early next year with a view to release the biopic in cinemas in 2009. It's expected the movie will partly be filmed in Jamaica.

It is as yet unclear who will portray the legendary musician. The film-makers are looking for two actors, one who would portray Marley aged 15 and the other one as an adult.

The project comes hot on the heels of another film about the reggae star. Martin Scorsese announced last week that he will direct a documentary about Bob Marley, co-produced by his son Ziggy. They are looking to release the film on February 6 2010, on what would have been the singer's 65th birthday.

Nor is this the first attempt to bring Bob Marley's life to the big screen. In 1999, Hollywood studio Warner Brothers planned to make a biopic based on Catch a Fire, a 1991 biography by Timothy White. Rohan Marley and Lauryn Hill were then considered to portray Bob and Rita Marley, but the project fell through after director Ron Shelton, and his replacement George Armitage, left the project.

A tradition was introduced many centuries ago to allow women to propose to men during a leap year. This privilege of proposing was restricted to leap day in some areas. Leap day was sometimes known as “Bachelors’ Day”. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage offer from a woman.
The tradition’s origin stemmed from an old Irish tale referring to St Bridget striking a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years. This old custom was probably made to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how the leap day balances the calendar.
It was also considered to be unlucky for someone to be born on a leap day in Scotland and for couples to marry on a leap year, including on a leap day, in Greece.
